Is There a Better Way?

breakthrough Sep 08, 2021

Is this all there is?  Is this as good as it gets?  Will my life ever be the same?  How will I ever go on without so and so?  These and many other questions ring loudly in my practice day in and day out.  I am well acquainted with the suffering of this life.  I have a front row seat to it every day.  I also have suffered much myself.

With this unique vantage point, I have come to see there is a better way.  Actually, it is the only way according to Jesus who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”.  John 14:6. Believing in Jesus is the better way. It is the way to eternal life.  Yeah, yeah, yeah, you say, “How does that help me now and with all my suffering?  What does that have to do with my suffering?

Well, Jesus also said, “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come that you may have life and life abundantly”. John 10:10   This doesn’t sound like a suffer now and wait for relief in heaven someday kind of GOD.  Jesus is very clear.  I have come to give you life and life abundantly.  What does abundant life actually mean?  Webster’s Dictionary defines abundant as existing or available in large quantities, having plenty of, more than enough.  Jesus has come to give us more than enough right now.  We only need to believe to receive.  This is the better way

What does this better way look like you ask? I am so glad you did.  Jesus has a lot to say about his kingdom and his ways.  One thing is for sure.  While we may suffer, he uses every bit of it for good.  Romans 8:28 is a beloved verse and no wonder why.  It is so full of promise.  “GOD works ALL things to the good for those who are called according to his purposes.”  There you have it, the GODWHY of our pain and suffering. GOD intends to us it for our good, the good of others, and his own glory.  We get to be part of the eternal story.  Jesus tag teams this truth with his own saying “The truth will set you free” and once we bear our souls to him, in truth, he takes our burdens and makes them bearable.

How this occurs is above my pay grade and a sure miracle but Jesus is blameless, faultless, and true.  Nothing he says is a lie.  You can rely on his promises and he promises in his word to make our burdens light. How can I be so sure?  We all can for he says so himself in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Or, said another way in the Message Bible Translation, “Are you tired?  Worn out?  Burned out on religion?  Come to me.  Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.  I’ll show you how to take a real rest.  Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.  Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.  I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.  Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly”

Did we just see the tremendous promises Jesus makes for our lives if we truly follow his lead, recovery, real rest, living freely and lightly.  This does not sound like we are going it alone, grinning and bearing it, puling ourselves up by our bootstraps, forcing our way through another day, performing out of duty or obligation, and on and on. This is not the way GOD intended for our lives to be.  He is beckoning us to himself and true freedom.

The truth of who you are is found in GODS word, not the accumulation of what you’ve done, what you can and can’t do or how others have treated you.  The truth of who you are begins to emerge as you wrestle with GOD.  He alone, knows exactly who you are and what you are purposed to be. He alone knows why he has created you and with him lies your destiny!

Jacob wrestled with GOD, Jonah wrestled with GOD, Gideon wrestled with GOD, we all, at some point, wrestle with GOD whether we realize it or not.  In finding GOD and seeing how he sees us, our GODWHY begins to emerge.  GODWHY is the hope God has intended for our suffering and the purpose He planned for it all along.  “We are more than conquerors through him who loves us”.  Romans 8:37. Our GODWHY is our better way!
